A songwriter based in North Carolina, Django Haskins has fronted the pop-noir band, The Old Ceremony, since 2004. He also forms one half of the psych-folk duo Au Pair with the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris. He has toured. He has been written about. In 2016 he received the NC Arts Council’s Artist Grant in recognition of his extensive creative exertions. He has been a part of the traveling circus known as Big Star’s Third since its inception in 2011. He has released thirteen albums of his songs in various guises.
Born and raised in North Carolina, the Tan and Sober Gentlemen began taking in the songs, stories, and tunes that make up their beloved state’s musical tradition before they could talk.
The music of the Carolinas (and Appalachia in general) stems from the marriage of the Irish fiddle and the African banjo, which first met in the South before the revolution. The Tan and Sober Gentlemen aim to bring these traditions full circle – blending Irish tunes, ballads, and pub songs with the Appalachian old-time and bluegrass music they grew up on, creating a ruckus known affectionately as “Irish-American hillbilly music”.
