Fiber Art by Katie Hatfield (July 2024)

I believe that what we surround ourselves with is important. The objects that we choose to embrace in our homes have significance and can be imbued with our essence. They can serve as touchstones to mark meaningful moments in life.

Gratitude and hope are the core elements that shape the fiber art that I make. My deepest desire is that you will experience joy as you bring my artwork into your homes and that the kindness and care that I pour into them will flow into your space.

Mixed Media by Kimberly Wheaton (April 2024)

I create vibrant and richly layered mixed-media paintings inspired by the creatures, patterns, and systems of the natural world. I work with oil paint, cold wax medium, oil sticks, graphite, and paper to build texture, color, and depth in my paintings. I add and remove layers in each painting in order to develop a history – both in the work itself and as a reflection of the painting subject. My background in environmental science and my years of work with The Nature Conservancy informs my art and shows in my affinity for trees, water, birds, bugs and other animals, and the rest of the living world.

I was a co-founder of Pleiades Gallery in downtown Durham (2013-2019) to provide more opportunities for local and regional artists to exhibit their work. I also was a member artist of Hillsborough Gallery of Arts (HGA) from 2007-2013. Currently I am represented by Horse & Buggy Press and Friends in Durham. My artwork has been featured in multiple episodes of HGTV’s Love It or List It, and my paintings are sought by private, corporate, and university collectors.

Lucy Manning and Sara Morris (November-December 2023)

Lucy Manning

I’m an illustrator and designer in Raleigh channeling my love of the local food scene and doughnuts into art. I am so excited to be at Yonder this month with Sara Morris, who has been my friend since we were paired up for a design project in a class at UNC! Outside of creating, I’m usually watching Carolina sports or reading a good book.

Sara Morris

I grew up in Winston-Salem and currently live in Durham and am so honored to be able to share my art with you this month at Yonder alongside my longtime Lucy Manning! Yonder is one of my favorite cozy spots in the Triangle, and I love the way that they make space for artists of all kinds. When I’m not drawing condiment bottles or messy kitchen counters you can find me teaching graphic design classes on Wednesday nights at the Durham Arts Council, or working at Clarkston Consulting.

DYLAN MAASS ART (October 2023)

Dylan Maass is a Triangle that has been creating as long as he can remember. Art became his main focus at the age of 17 beginning with music and further branching out to every medium he could think of from textiles, photography, painting, etc.

If Dylan isn’t creating art they are most likely tending to their garden or spending quality time with their cats. They love being outside and find the most inspiration in nature. Dylan Maass is currently working on a website but for now, you can find them on Instagram. If you would like to connect please send a message or reach them directly by email – dylanmaass123@gmail.com

CAROLYN FAUTEUX ART (August-September 2023)

With a unique + controlled style, Carolyn has been painting for almost 25 years. Through thoughtful combinations of color + gesture, her distorted figures act as visual invitations for viewers to engage with her work on a deep level. Whether it be through intricate details or implied movement, she aims to create pieces that balance intrigue and beauty.

With a deliberate precision in brushwork application, her latest works, The Landscape Series, lack the human figure – an attempt to evoke emotion through vast and empty scenery.

PAINTINGS OF JET ZUNG WITH RAINBOW CABBAGE (June 2023)

About The Artist

Coming from a family of artists and musicians it is hardly surprising that Jet took to painting at an early age. Here you can see the 2-year-old artist in his element, slinging paint and taking names. Guided by his faithful muse, Aunt Rainbow, Jet learned to channel the frenzied energy of a toddler into masterful drip-technique paintings.

DEBBIE CORINA (April 2023-May 2023)

About The Artist

Cleveland-based artist Debbie Corina moved to Hillsborough, NC in 2009, where she found a vibrant, unique art community.  She has found it incredibly inspiring to talk to other artists, learn their stories, and see their work.  Debbie has been creating art for as long as she can remember and considers it a vital means of expression. Her early work was primarily commissioned portraits rendered in graphite. In 2005, Debbie started Art From The Heart Portraits, fully embracing the challenge of creating expressive work in black and white, taking care to pull out fine details and depict the subject with heart and soul. She later fell head over heels with color. She worked extensively in soft pastel.  The immediacy of the medium…being able to quickly paint confident marks of pure, vibrant pigment was alluring. Seeking additional means of expressing brilliant, bold ideas, Debbie began to experiment with Encaustic painting. She was immediately smitten with it. Taking inspiration from nature and emotion, she finds it exciting to see each piece change and grow into something beautiful, and sometimes mysterious.  The molten wax often takes on a life of its own and ultimately becomes just what it is meant to be. Debbie also works in colored pencil, acrylic, and oil. Each medium brings its own unique experience and new ways to represent her vision of the world around her.

SLADE / WHALEN (February 2023)

About The Artist-Katharine Whalen

Katharine Whalen is an artist and musician from North Carolina. She has shown work ranging in mediums from photography, oil painting, collage, millinery, and all else in between. Show locations have included Ackland Art Museum Store, Carrboro Town Hall, Century Center, and a poster show here at Yonder.

The works shown here are four collages, an “Eve” series involving self-portraits and reacting to the natural world whilst feeling pissed off about recent abortion bannings.

The “Cecelia Suffrage” series came from photos of my daughter from a Centennial Show at Carrboro Town Hall. These were double exposed after the original hanging.

The “Crime Doll” series is a loose, abstract timeline of an unspecified horrible family situation.

About The Artist-Marcela Slade

Marcela Slade lives in Carrboro, NC. Slade is an artist, designer, curator, teacher, entrepreneur…an advocate for love and culture. The pieces in this show are the first “abstract” work Slade has ever exhibited.

“I use painting as a form of expression and voice. I like to work with my subconscious in order to get feelings and emotions out through painting in order to stay sane. I can plan a painting but prefer to lay down the strokes and color intuitively and then pull out what I see*. That technique and rotating the canvas in the process give me endless possibilities and puts me in touch with my subconscious and the magic of painting. The theme of my work is often autobiographical and intermittently reflects my active interests in love, religion, literature, politics, art, and current affairs.

*…I have not pulled anything out this time. These are just abstract expressions through color and stroke.”

Slade comes from a multicultural background. She was born in Redlands, California but moved at the age of 4, growing up between Bogotá, Colombia, and Chapel Hill, NC.

She went to school at SCAD Savannah, GA, debuted her career in Barcelona, Spain (2000-2008), and then moved to Quito, Ecuador (2008-2016) before settling in Carrboro. In both Barcelona and Quito, she had baby boys and co-owned and operated gallery shop studios with her designer architect husband whom she met at SCAD. They currently have their studio xerrajeros in downtown Carrboro at 118 East Main Street / Suite 210. Slade teaches at North Carolina State University, North Carolina Central University, and one-on-one classes at her studio.

Slade also serves as curator for the Town of Carrboro. You can follow slade on instagram @marcelaslade / @sladesign or check out her website: xerrajeros.com

BENEATH THE SURFACE by JODI OHL (Dec 2022-Jan 2023)

About The Artist

Jodi Ohl is a best-selling author, award-winning mixed-media artist, and creative instructor, originally from Dunkirk, NY, who now resides in Aberdeen, NC. Having left her day job in 2011 to pursue her artistic career full-time, she has built a body of work that is known for its distinctive texture, and bold color combinations which are often whimsical or abstract compositions, as well as motivational in nature.

Jodi’s best-selling book, Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink, was released by North Light Books in 2016. Jodi is currently working on a variety of new writing and video projects. Combining her approachable teaching and writing style, Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink is much like having a seat next to the artist at one of her popular workshops. You can find a full listing of classes, weekly musings, and additional artwork for sale at www.jodiohl.com.

About The Medium

Her latest collection is a series of abstract works titled Beneath the Surface. The collection represents one of her overall themes in her abstract artwork which is that there are many layers to us all that we must unfold to really understand a person and in a metaphorical sense, the art in general. What appears on the surface is comprised of many complicated twists and turns in the creative journey and in one’s life.  Digging beneath the surface often reflects the actual story of who or what is in front of you. Just as every painting evolves stroke by stroke and color by color as it takes shape, our life’s journey evolves over every experience and interaction big and small.

MIXED MEDIA ENCAUSTIC PAINTINGS by JAMIE MCPHAIL (November 2022)

Jamie McPhail

About the Artist

I am a North Carolina-based artist, working in encaustic and mixed media. Allegorical, primitive, personal, and political, my work is inspired by the simple lines and forms of the natural world and the nuanced complexity and chaos of the human condition. Drawing on my 40-year career as a bartender, I explore how relationships, connections, and environment interplay to form a narrative and inform our perspective. I have exhibited in numerous solo and group shows throughout the east coast.

Join Jamie at Yonder on Friday, November 25 during the Last Friday Art Walk. Have a cocktail. Shop Local. Support Small Businesses and the arts.

About the Medium

Encaustics is a medium made of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. The paint must be molten to work, so my palette is a hotplate. The hot liquid wax is applied to a porous surface. The paint is then fused to the working surface with a torch or heat gun. Then another layer is applied and fused. My paintings incorporate many layers and are often scraped back to reveal what lies beneath.

NC-VASED by SARA C. MORRIS (October 2022)

About the Series

The NC-Vased series is a celebration of all things North Carolina and plays on the themes of contrast and high vs. low. I’m proud to have grown up in North Carolina, and I wanted to highlight a lot of the businesses and products (both big and small) that started here and find a way to turn them into unique and funky pieces of art.

About the Artist

I grew up in Winston-Salem and currently live in Durham and am so honored to be able to share my art with you this month at Yonder! Yonder is one of my favorite cozy spots in the Triangle, and I love the way that they make space for artists of all kinds. When I’m not drawing condiment bottles, you can find me teaching graphic design classes on Monday nights at the Durham Arts Council, or working at Clarkston Consulting.

STORYTELLING ART BY MIRA (August/September 2022)

The Artist

Mira Pronobis was born in Poland. At an early age, her family moved to Germany where she lived most of her life. In 2008 Mira came to the United States and is currently living in Chapel Hill, NC.

Storytelling Art

Stories are soul food. It is a fundamental part of being human. I’m creating storytelling art about society, politics, and the daily challenges people face. I like to use the entire spectrum of colors to catch viewers’ attention and then invite them on a journey through the painting where they can watch the story unfold. I incorporate plot twists and small hidden elements for the audience to find.

I hope through my art I can inspire and uplift peoples’ spirits. I feel my journey has just begun and I am looking forward to creating more art to share with you!

Inspired by my dad, I started sketching at a very early age. I experimented with watercolors, oil paint, and markers, but found my true home in acrylic paints.

ACRYLIC PAINTINGS BY FAB BIANCHI (June 2022)

Ancient markings and urban graffiti have always intrigued me with the intuitive rhythm of color and calculated marks, revealing different interpretations of a multilayered world into the sublime. Within a synoptic bridge between the here and now, my colorful abstract landscapes reveal their own language for each viewer to decipher for themselves.

As with many of my paintings, I enjoy the exploration of symbols and the double entendre of words juxtaposed into new concepts and abstract landscapes. In Pan Amaru, I hint at a variety of contrasts: here and there—indigenous cultures of North and South America; then and now—ancient mythological motifs and urban graffiti; positive and negative—pushing and pulling abstract shapes that protrude next to one form while subdued next to others; and light and dark—the vertical hierarchy between a darker subterranean world and a brighter ethereal realm.

Fabrizio Bianchi has been an active artist for over 35 years, displaying his work in local venues including the Durham Art Guild, Raleigh’s Contemporary Art Museum, NC Museum of Art, Block Gallery, Visual Art
Exchange, Diamante Cultural Center, Carrboro Century Center, and the 311 Gallery. With a BFA in Painting from East Carolina University and an MFA in Painting from UNM, Fabrizio has also taught several traditional and digital art classes in the Triangle.

Photos by Monica Meyer (February 2022)

FOD – Foreign Object Damage

Bio:

Born and raised in California, from a family of immigrant field workers, Monica joined
the military in the Post 9-11 spirit, but also to escape a bad first marriage. She met the love of her life at her first duty station, they married and had a child. After serving almost a decade, she returned to California with her husband and son to be closer to family. Struggling to adjust to post-military life she moved to North Carolina and found a welcoming community with opportunities in the triangle, and found a home in Hillsborough. In 2018, she welcomed her second son.

Working Through Trauma in Photography

The Tunnel:

She begins entering the tunnel, a path to escape her life. She is flirty and fierce with a light in her eyes going down this path alone. Before she knows it, the woman is trapped and what light she sees at the end, the light that is supposed to be her escape ends up directing her to more darkness; a series of traumatic events. Trusting what should’ve been a safe and controlled environment. Spiraling in the tunnel, the illuminated fight in her eyes among the darkness, and unable to find her true north she is stuck in a constant dissociative state.

The Bubble:

Vomit in her hair, taste of stomach acids on her breath, and nothing stopped him. Waking up the next morning, bruised and shattered. Perpetually living in a bubble to prevent additional breaking of her fragility, on her sleeve broken pieces of herself for everyone to see. Every now and then her sharp edges cause her to burst her protective barrier and the world can see her true agony. Back in the bubble she can hide among the pretty casts of colors she hides behind, her colorful smile, the romantic blush, but behind it still the face of remembered times.

The two sets are very symbolic of my symptoms of PTSD from military sexual trauma. Getting into photography the last year has allowed me to speak out about this more and forced me outside of my bubble, and more importantly allowed me to find a non-destructive, productive outlet for my emotions. The truth as we all know, is that my story is not rare, and I absolutely know I’m not special, many of us exist and many more are worse than mine. These types of stories are heard from those of all walks of life.

Line Art by Sarah Rosa Glickman (December 2021-January 2022)

Palette Knives + Acrylic Paint by Sarah Rosa Glickman (December 2021)

Sarah Glickman December Artist at Yonder, Southern Cocktails and Brew

The designs of Sarah Rosa Creations are meant to reflect the beauty in simplicity, nature, and the human body. Each design is intended to appear relatable, but at the same time open to interpretation. My drive to design this type of art stems from a desire for everyone to see themselves as beautiful, represented, and valued – no matter who and no matter what.

My abstract paintings are done using acrylic paint and palette knives on either canvas or wood panel. These paintings come from within. Each one is vastly different from the next because each one is fueled by the emotions that I am experiencing in the moment of creating. So many factors play a role – music, atmosphere, company, life. My feelings guide these paintings by helping me determine colors, spacing, and shape. If it feels right, I add it. If it feels wrong, I don’t. Nothing is planned, everything is intuitive.

Encaustic Art by Anna Zirkel (November 2021)

Anna Zirkle

Anna Zirkel is from Indianapolis, Indiana. She spent a decade living in Chicago and New York City before moving to Hillsborough, North Carolina. She earned her undergraduate degree in education and her master’s degree in counseling. When she’s not in her artist studio she runs a college counseling business called The Admissions Wayfinder.

Anna began working with pottery when she moved to North Carolina and was trained by Julie Berkowitz in Chapel Hill. During the pandemic, she learned to work with encaustic paint which opened doors to a wide range of media that is incorporated into her wax paintings. She uses photographs (vintage and original), nature, pottery, and found objects in her encaustic work to give it a whimsical vibe.

What is encaustic?

Encaustic paint is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. The word encaustic originates from the ancient Greek meaning “burning in” or “to burn.” This form of art dates back to the 5th-century b.c.

Paintings by Laura Hughes (August 2021/September 2021)

Laura Berendsen Hughes is a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer living in Durham. She has a BFA in sculpture from UNC-Chapel Hill and has worked as a professional graphic designer for many years. She uses her graphic design skills as an integral part of the process of creating initial compositions as well as adding final twists and turns.

Laura paints dramatic, monumental compositions that balance initial spontaneity with the maturity of many layers of washes, impastos, and line work. Her abstract work is created with many techniques using multiple layers until there is a sense of final maturity. She refines the seemingly spontaneous and varied marks until they become more rich and satisfying. She often takes large risks at the end with the introduction of negative spaces that break up the composition and repositions the parts into new shapes.

Laura titles her works using bits of the ecstatic poems of the poet and Sufi mystic Rumi, who describes the spiritual nature of physical reality and the ultimate goal of uniting with the Devine.

Oil Paintings on Canvas by Kevin Peddicord (July 2021)

Artist Statement

My primary work is figurative in oils, with an eye toward the nostalgic. Although the works are figurative in nature, they can also be considered as snapshots of a narrative. There is usually a story going on and I try to convey that in the expressions and poses of the subjects. Their attire is classic and timeless, very much at home today as it was eighty years ago. And, if a touch of wry humor sneaks in, so much the better!

I am also heavily influenced by classic cinema and have produced a number of works based on cinematic imagery. My goal is twofold: to honor the iconic images that have shaped film history and to keep alive these moments and performers for future generations.

Influences – My influences are first and foremost films, stretching from the early Silents of the 1920s to Exploitation films of the 1970s.

Bio – A commercial illustrator since 1980, I have worked primarily in the sports entertainment field (Carolina Hurricanes, Durham Bulls, Baltimore Orioles, NASI, NASCAR, WCW, etc.) as well as the retail food business. My business, The Vision Vault, Inc., has been providing graphic design services since 2000.

I have participated in a number of shows at various galleries in Raleigh, Cary, Winston-Salem, and Wilmington. I also created a pop-up art shop in downtown Raleigh, “Twisted Oak, a Pop-Up Art Shop.”

Original Poster Art by Katharine Whalen (June 2021)

Artist Statement

Poster making is a deep joy of mine, I’ve always admired the form, it is immediate and truly pop. I love combining photography and found media in my posters, and have come to embrace my technology limitations as a signature style. Posters are fortune tellers and remembrances of occasions, here’s to many more!

Mixed Media by Natalia Torres del Valle (April-May 2021)

Artist Statement

I make abstract and highly textural paintings built on memories of natural landscapes that I have seen or experienced. My intuitive approach to materials and process is influenced by my expressive arts therapy practice. In my work, I meet individuals where they are and respond to what is presented in the moment. This same idea drives my art making process. It often entails discovering what is underneath the surface and responding to the unpredictable forms that emerge.

I do not use a reference while painting because I want the memory of place to be distant and faded, drawing a parallel between the erosion of memory and erosion of the physical environment. I sketch loose outlines of what I remember and jot down notes of any particular textures or forms that caught my eye. When I paint, I repeatedly build up and erode the image using water and air to break down layers of color, mirroring the natural erosion of the environment.

My paintings are dimensional and feel like rare moments of witnessing life, growth, light, and form, on walks in the mountains and forests, or even in your own backyard. My color choices represent the extreme possibilities of color found in nature and are representations of the time, history, and change we see in the life forms around us. My art making process is a constant exploration of the ephemerality of a material, landscape, and memory. I hope that my work encourages a deeper intimacy with and a sense of urgency to protect the natural world.

Photograph Series: Reintegration

This mixed media series of photography and hand embroidery reflects the gratitude I have towards North Carolina’s landscape. I took photographs that encouraged me to be mindful as I walked in the woods, looking for unique textures in natural objects that are often overlooked. The slow method of stitching added another layer of mindfulness and appreciation as I highlighted or exaggerated textures captured in the photograph. My hope is that the viewer will look closely at my work for subtle details, such as a clear bead for a dewdrop, and in turn, want to have that same conscious interaction with the natural world.

Paintings by Linda Starr (November 2020 – March 2021)

New York City native Linda Starr is an artist of passion who exudes the spirit of the colorful and playful energy of her work. Her intuitive painting process is an arrival point that has been bubbling up for the artist over her multi-decade career as a painter, 10 years of which she spent in private study with Carla Re’, a well know artist of New York City.

Like many self-taught artists, Linda is a tour de force with an exhibition history as diverse and robust as her passions. Linda has always had roles in which she applied her visual design skills, including her 15 years in the film industry in New York City and 10 years as a senior Visual Display Specialist designing window displays. These experiences have shaped and enriched her work as a visual artist.

Linda has a desire to push boundaries, and a quest for diverse achievements to add to her career, as is evidenced by her fervorous involvement in professional development programs and with her artist community. Since her arrival to North Carolina in 2007, Linda has been an engaged member of multiple artist groups and works to champion opportunities and make space for women artists of her age. From her icon-like paintings of strong female leaders like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to her paintings depicting vibrant, semi-realistic settings and subjects, Linda’s work exudes a confidence and energy that has culminated from a lifetime of diverse arts experiences which propel her forward in her work today.

Linda is Co-Founder of the North Carolina Women’s Art Collective and a member of several art organizations. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with her husband, daughter, and beloved rescue dogs Mickey and Maggie.

Portrait Photography by Chris Ubik (February 2020)

“It is one thing to photograph people. It is another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness.” ― Paul Strand

Photography is my love language.

I am a photographer because of the joy it brings to my subjects, the joy it brings to the viewer, and the joy it brings to myself. Everything you see on these walls was taken for the love of the game. They were not taken with the intention to sell or with an eye towards marketability. They exist because of the joy they bring.

There are few things in life that make me happier than having one of my subjects beam when they see an image of themselves that I captured. That transition from nervousness to disbelief to recognition that, yep: that’s really them and they are fabulous! I live for those moments when people who don’t like to be photographed swoon and say, “I shouldn’t like an image of myself this much.” Well yes, yes you should.

I live for those moments when someone raves about a subject. When they want to know more, see more, experience more (but please – don’t be a dick). Many of the subjects on these walls are taking risks that they never thought themselves capable of taking and I love the positive, affirming response to that.

And in those quiet, honest moments, I love how photography makes me feel. In many ways I’m the last person you’d think would be a portrait photographer. I am an ambivert (a.k.a. “introverted extrovert”), so I can’t always predict when I’ll want human interaction. I am asexual, so my concept of what is beautiful or sexy or erotic ranges from atypical to nonexistent. I battle depression, and depression lies and tells you the things you enjoy aren’t worth doing. Photographing allows me to confront all of these sometimes annoying facets and keeps me connected with the world in new and interesting ways.

Photography is my love language. I didn’t intend for it to be, but I’m grateful to the friends who pose for me, the family that supports this madness, and you, the viewer. And there may I hope that love shines through these works.

Thank you and I hope you enjoy my art.
