You ever walked out onto your front porch with a tune, and the birds outside sing along?
That’s what happens with Colin Cutler, but those birds carry a fiddle or a dobro or a steel guitar. Sometimes a chicken hawk shows up with a bass or an emu sidles up with an accordion.
Colin Cutler is a Greensboro-based singer-songwriter toting a guitar, banjo, and a mugful of harmonicas.
The Birds Outside are a collection of odd birds from the North Carolina piedmont who flock together around the music. Pulling from Appalachian old-time, Piedmont blues, and Dust Bowl storytelling songs, the music ranges from tragic to joy-filled to hilarious and twisted, with inspirations from southern literature, medieval ballads, and Colin’s own misadventures around the US and abroad.
He cut his musical teeth while in grad school at UNC-G before the Army took him overseas, lived in England for a year and a half studying creative writing and playing music on the street, and taught in Romania (and played with a Bulgarian bluegrass star) before he moved back to North Carolina with the pandemic. He’s had songs on stations around North Carolina and Virginia, Ireland, BBC Introducing, and a British zombie movie, but his best stories are probably about that one time in Kentucky.
