ARTIST STATEMENT
I started collaging during Covid when we were spending so much time at home. I was caregiving for my ninety-four year old mother and my husband, a Vietnam Veteran, who had Parkinson’s Disease. One evening, while we were all watching TV I decided to make some collages. I was inspired by a collage that a friend posted on Instagram. I discovered that the process of making a collage was therapeutic and joyful. I collage every day and find it meditative and transportive. When making an abstract collage I go through magazines, paper, and fabric that I have collected to find colors, textures, and patterns that appeal to me. I then cut them into different shapes and place them on the base until the collage has developed into a finished piece of art.
I want to give a shout out to my eleven year old granddaughter, Sophie, and her good friends Violet and Adelle. they took the time to look at and absorb the energy of many of my collages and helped me find titles for them. I also want to give a shout out to the Scrap Exchange in Durham for creating a space where everyone in the community can go to buy recycled materials to create their own arts and crafts.
And, as always, I want to honor my husband and mother who have since left this Earthly plane. They were always supportive of my art and were my biggest fans. They are forever in my heart.
